I think it is appropriate to use the invisible web if researching something academic such as a research paper on the living by a high volume highway and the high number of cancer in the neighboring communities (ex) but for things like a recipe or buying a car these are such simple things and do not require such indepth information.

I have never used some of the sites suggested in this class, it’s great to know that there are so many other resources out there to help with research. There is a combination of information compiled in the noted sites. Bing.com 1st link was medical research but then went on to list less educational information such as Wiki and online gambling. Yahoo starts off with the Wiki definition link then goes back and forth from more scholarly articles to less scholarly sites ie: ans.com. The Librarians’ Internet Index gives the searcher the option weather they would like to look up a more scholarly limks (i.e: medical, health, science) to a less educational links (i.e.: media, recreational) which I thought was good to weed out sites and save time. Deepdyve.com seemed to me to be the most scholarly as all the links I went on were research results, surveys etc…

Wk4-Pt I: New Habits

Well I cannot say that I have any new habits because I have taken several english courses that have required me to do extensive research for papers. I most often start off using Google.com or GoogleScholar.com and work my way through their links. I sometimes will go through the NYTimes.com site as well as Queens library if I am lucky enough to find a book on the specific topics I am researching. I admit that I do enjoy watching the Daily Show with Jon Stewart everynight because even though it is a comedy news show there is still enough truth it to make you think. I find the show’s coverage not only funny but honest, a trait I do not think is practiced much by many of the serious news shows lately. I will often research the topic that Jon Stewart is mocking for the day and more often then not I find that the Daily Show asides from being funny is holding up a mirror to today’s political blunders and outright lies and making hard for the politicians to deny their culpability. I also watch the channel 7 as well as Anderson Cooper from CNN because even though CNN is often one-sided Mr. Cooper still manages to give unbiased news coverage.

For this assignment I used the KISS system (keep it simple silly) I just typed in Health Care Reform and I was not lacking for any type of information Pro or Con. It is a hot topic right now. I chose the GOV site because as pointed out in the Understanding Media article “Who Sent This Message” and we all know that the US government is the one attempting to implement this reform. I went one step further by picking on the Secretary of Health & Human Services link because quite simply it is a health issue.

I intentionally searched for a CNN article because I know that they bash the health reform on a daily basis, and I was not disappointed because they were 5th on the list.

I normally try to chose GOV or educational research sites when doing research. I find them to be less fluff, I don’t like sites which include advertisement or links to other frivolous sites. Like I said before the KISS system is the one I like – simple, direct to the point – just the facts. I do normally research the author of a article when possible to see their educational and career background to see if I can determine where their biases may stand.

Had my first exam in Nutrition Wednesday, did not think I did well – I got a 94!!!

Week 3: 2 exams, 1 essay, my online course and I took part in a wedding – I am officially running on fumes. I am hoping to get some sleep this weekend along with lots of study time.

I have come to the end of my 1st week of the fall 09 semester and I am tired. I am taking 10 credits along with working my regular 40 hr week. Can I just repeat I am tired! I am taking an honors course LIB 200, as well as the online LRC 103, ELL 101 and SCD 200. What was I think?! Oh yeah I forget, I want to graduate Well I better get back to work my break is over. Tonight hitting the books hard, trying to keep one step ahead of the syllibi.

Hello All!

My name is Eileen Garcia-Corredor and I am a upper sophomore student at LaGuardia Community College. I am 16 credits shy of graduating, which God willing will be completed by Spring 2010. I graduated high school 22 years ago, yes I am ancient – I owned vinyl records. I am a single mother to my 19 year old son who is also a sophomore in college and the joy in my life. I am really enjoying my college experience and try to get the most of every course. I will keep you all posted on my progress towards graduation. Take care all.
